In the case of National Insurance Co. Ltd. Vs. Laxmi Narain Dhut reported in AIR 2007 SC 1563, it has been opined that more often than not, literal interpretation of a statute or a provision of a statute results in absurdity and, therefore, while interpreting statutory provisions, the courts should keep in mind the object or purpose for which the statute has been enacted.
