18. Regarding the importance of protection of one's reputation, the
Supreme Court in Subramanian Swamy v. Union of India8 whilst dealing
with the constitutional validity of Sections 499 and 500 of the Indian Penal
Code, 1860 and Section 199 of the Criminal Procedure Code, 1973, made the
following observations: -
