When an inamdar dies, the Collector has discretion to reduce the inam, but this should not be done, except for special reasons to be recorded in writing, when the eldest son succeeds, nor except in special cases when owing to the unfitness of the eldest son a younger son or grandson of the last holder succeeds. The power of reduction may be exercised more freely when the inam is given to a person who is not in the direct line of descent.
