Indiankanoon.org is a website that provides free access to Indian legal "documents" and will be called Indian Kanoon/Ikanoon from now on. The "Premium Members" refers to those users who pay for services on Indian Kanoon other than the free access to law that is already available to everyone. These services will be called "Premium Member Services" from now on. Premium Member Services include note taking tool called NoteIK, the Query Alert Service and the Prism, the set of legal tools that use Generative Artificial Intelligence.
This Privacy Policy describes Websites collection, use and disclosure of Your information when You use the Service. Ikanoon uses Your Personal data to provide and improve the Service. Your access to the website is permitted only on the condition that you agree to the current privacy policy. In case you disagree you should immediately stop using the website. By agreeing to the privacy policy and by using the Service, You agree to the collection and use of information in accordance with this Privacy Policy.
Policy on Personal Data based on Public documents: Court judgments are public records. If a case is heard by a court of India, no one can argue that the opinion should not be published and viewable by all, unless the court itself expressly says it cannot be published or a law says it cannot be displayed. We will not remove or modify any public documents without an order of the court competent to do so. Remember, there are many, many copies of these court decisions in existence, and Indian Kanoon has just one of those many copies.
In a limited set of cases, we will remove the name, address and any other identity of the victim from the court judgments for that please visit the case removal page.
Interpretation
The words of which the initial letter is capitalized have meanings defined under the following conditions. The following definitions shall have the same meaning regardless of whether they appear in singular or in plural.

For the purposes of this Privacy Policy:

NoteIK and Query Alert Data refers to the notes a user makes while reading documents on Ikanoon and thequeries that a user registers for alerts.
Prism Session Data refers to the queries, document uploaded and response obtained as part of sessions while using the Prism tool.
Usage Data refers to data collected automatically, either generated by the use of the Service or from the Service infrastructure itself (for example, the duration of a page visit).
Service refers to search, document access, premium member services or any other services that the website offers.
Google Analytics refers to: Google Analytics is a web analytics service offered by Google that tracks and reports website traffic. It tracks website performance and collects visitor insights.
LLM Providers refer to the set of companies or organizations that develops, trains, and offers access to Large Language Models (LLMs) with whom Ikanoon has entered into a contract to provide LLM services for operating Prism tools.
Personal Data
While using Our Service as a Premium Member, Ikanoon asks You to provide Us with certain personally identifiable information that can be used to contact or identify You. Personally identifiable information may include, but is not limited to:
Email address
First name and last name
Phone number
State, Province, ZIP/Postal code, City
IKanoon reserves the right to use your picture and other details like name, occupation and location to help other Premium Members to find you.
NoteIK and Query Alert Data
IKanoon will also be free to use your legal mark-ups in court judgments, without your notes, to enhance their reading. Your research notes, topics and drafts in NoteIK and the Query Alert Data would be shared with the general public or other Premium Members as per your privacy settings. It is your responsibility to ensure that you have set the privacy settings as you want it to be.
Prism Session Data
When You use IK Prism (GenAI Tool), a session comprises of queries You submit, the documents You upload and the responses you obtain. The Prism Session Data will not be shared with anyone other than LLM providers for generating a response whenever a new query is given. You will be required to manage it as you deem fit. The LLM providers are contractually obligated to protect your data and use it only for the purposes for which it was shared.
Ikanoon reserves the right to use anonymized or aggregated Prism Session Data to investigate issues with its service and on improving the services.
Cookies Policy
Ikanoon uses Cookies and similar tracking technologies to track the activity on Our Service and store certain information.
Cookies means small files that are placed on Your computer, mobile device or any other device by a website, containing details of your browsing history on that website among its many uses.

Ikanoon may use your Personal Data for the following purposes:
To provide and maintain our Service, including to monitor usage.
To manage Your Account: to manage Your registration as a user of the Service. The Personal Data You provide can give You access to different functionalities of the Service that are available to You as a registered user.
For the performance of a contract: the development, compliance and undertaking of the purchase contract for the products, items or services You have purchased or of any other contract with Us through the Service.
To contact You: To contact You by email, telephone calls, SMS, or other equivalent forms of electronic communication, such as a mobile application's push notifications regarding updates or informative communications related to the functionalities, products or contracted services, including the security updates, when necessary or reasonable for their implementation.
To manage Your requests: To attend and manage Your requests to Ikanoon.
For other purposes: We may use Your information for other purposes, such as data analysis, identifying usage trends, determining the effectiveness of our promotional campaigns and to evaluate and improve our Service, products, services, marketing and your experience.
Ikanoon may share Your personal information in the following situations:
Demand from Law Enforcement Authorities: If we receive a legal order to disclose any information required by governing authorities we may choose to comply with it.
Blocking of account: we may also block your account in case we receive a legal order to do so.
Retention of Your Personal Data
Ikanoon will retain Your Personal Data only for as long as is necessary for the purposes set out in this Privacy Policy. We will retain and use Your Personal Data to the extent necessary to comply with our legal obligations. (for example, if we are required to retain your data to comply with applicable laws)
Ikanoon will also retain Usage Data for internal analysis purposes and improve the functionality of Our Service for perpetuity.

Your information, including Personal Data, is processed at the IKanoon’s operating offices and in any other places where the parties involved in the processing are located. Ikanoon shares aggregate Usage Data with third-party researchers and reserves the right to share with individuals or any organization.

You have the right to delete or request that We assist in deleting the Personal Data that We have collected about You. (your request for deletion will be processed within 30 days from request)
Our Service may give You the ability to delete certain information about You from within the Service.
You may update, amend, or delete Your information at any time by signing in to Your Account, if you have one, and visiting the account settings section that allows you to manage Your personal information. You may also contact Us to request access to, correct, or delete any personal information that You have provided to Us.

We only collect personal data from Premium Members, who have to be above the age of 18 years to sign up for it, people below the age of 18 can access the website but No direct data is collected from them.

Our Service may contain links to other websites that are not operated by Us. If You click on a third party link, You will be directed to that third party's site. We strongly advise You to review the Privacy Policy of every site You visit.
We have no control over and assume no responsibility for the content, privacy policies or practices of any third party sites or services.
