DR. M.K. VISHNU PRASAD (ARANI): Thank you, Sir. In my Arani Parliamentary Constituency, there is dam called the Shenbaga Thoppu Dam, which was proposed by Dr. Kalaignar in 1989. Immediately after that, the other Government came and the file kept gathering dust. Again, in 1996, Dr. Kalaignar came to power and so he got all the environmental clearances and the work was about to start. Then, after the Government changed, somehow the work on the Shenbaga Thoppu Dam began, but unfortunately, they have not constructed the dam as per the specifications. The dam was so weak that as some rain came, the shutters got washed away. Finally, the shutters went into to the gutters because of the quality of construction of this dam.
Now, I would urge upon the Union Government to intervene immediately in this matter. The Jal Shakti Ministry has to intervene in the matter. In 1999, this project’s cost was Rs. 30 crore. Now, the estimated cost for its repair is Rs. 30 crore. The work on this dam is pending for nearly 30 years; 4,000 hectares of irrigation land is getting dried-up; and many thousand families of agriculturists are suffering due to it. So, I would urge upon the Jal Shakti Ministry and the Government to kindly intervene in the matter and finish the work on the Shenbaga Thoppu Dam in Polur in my Arani Parliamentary Constituency.
