T. SUMATHY (A) THAMIZHACHI THANGAPANDIAN (CHENNAI SOUTH): Hon. Speaker, Sir, thank you for allowing me to raise this important issue in Zero Hour. Wetlands and marshlands are nation’s important treasures which need to be taken care of. One such wetland, a lake, which has been craving for attention is Valachery lake in my South Chennai constituency and it has been neglected even after long-pending request from the public.
The present AIADMK Government has turned a blind eye and deaf ear to the request of the people. Excess sewage from the metro water pumping stations is let out into the Raj Bhawan canal which drives into it. A lakeside toilet built by the Corporation also empties into it. Umpteen number of requests to the Corporation of Chennai have not been given attention to. So, I would request the Minister concerned to declare it as an ecological heritage spot and allocate funds for its restoration and conversion into an eco-park.
