Seventeenth Loksabha > Title: Regarding grant of approval for the development of BDD Chawls existing on the MbPT land at Sewri-laid.
SHRI ARVIND SAWANT (MUMBAI SOUTH): In Mumbai, there are four clusters of BDD Chawls namely Worli, Naigaon, N. M. Joshi Marg & Sewri. A total of 217 buildings were raised on 92.70 acres of land in the year 1920 by Bombay Development Board and hence are known as BDD Chawls. Since these buildings are 100 years old & are in dilapidated conditions, the Govt. of Maharashtra has decided to redevelop these buildings. Govt. of Maharashtra took the onus of development of these buildings through MHADA, a Govt. Authority and offered the resident a new home having the carpet area equivalent to 640 sq. ft. free in place of present 160 sq ft room i.e., on ownership. The project has been launched and the work is in progress. The scheme will be made applicable to all BDD Chawls clusters except Sewri as the Ministry of Shipping has not granted the approval till date. It is really unfair and unjustified as these residents are being deprived of their legitimate right to get the free house having 640 sq ft area. These buildings are on the land of MbPT which is under the control of the Ministry of Shipping. What is required is approval of the Shipping Ministry for development which is being carried by the Govt. of Maharashtra & not by private developer and where Shipping Ministry do not have to incur any expenditure. Moreover, it is in tune with the Hon’ble Prime Minister’s dream to provide a Pucca Ghar to every houshold. Hence, I request the Ministry of Shipping to grant the approval to Govt. of Maharashtra for the development of BDD chawls existing on the MbPT land at Sewri.
