Section 6(1) in The Standards of Weights and Measures (National Standards) Rules, 1988
(1)Decimal multiples and sub-multiples of base, supplementary, derived or other units shall be formed, unless otherwise specified, by using either the full name, or symbol of the SI prefix specified in Schedule III.
