- The gate and the wicket of the gate of every jail shall, except when it is necessary to open the same for the purpose of lawfully passing any person or thing into or out of the jail, be kept shut and locked, and the gatekeeper for the time being on duty shall retain the keys of the locks of such gate and wicket in his personal possession until the prisoners are locked up for the night.
