DR. P. VENUGOPA.L (TIRUVALLUR): Madam Speaker, through you, I would like to bring to the notice of the hon. Union Minister of Railways and the hon. House the very pathetic condition of railway coaches that the Railways run for the passengers.
As we all know, Indian Railways run one of the largest networks in the world but sadly the condition of most of the coaches is very pathetic. The coaches of some of the long-distance trains including Duronto are very old. When this is the case of premium trains needless to talk of express, mail and other passenger trains. The trains run by the Indian railways, more especially of the Southern Railway, have coaches that are more than 15-20 years old. … (Interruptions)I want to share my views with the hon. Members that 150-year old locomotive factory and 60-year old Integral Coach Factory are situated in Tamil Nadu. … (Interruptions) There is an urgent need to replace them with new coaches. When the Railway Ministry is boasting itself of giving the best passenger amenities, it should think about replacing the old and dilapidated coaches with new ones.
