Section 56 in The Prisons Act, 1977

56. Confinement in irons.

- Whenever the Superintendent considers it necessary (with reference either to the state of the prison or the character of the prisoners) for the safe custody of any prisoners that they should be confined in irons, he may, subject to such rules and instructions as may be laid down by the [Inspector General] [In section 3(1), 5, 6, 7, 11(2), 38, 41, 46, 56, 59, 60 and 62 the words 'the Government' substituted for the words 'His Highness' by Act X of 1996.] with the sanction of [the Government] [In section 3(1), 5, 6, 7, 11(2), 38, 41, 46, 56, 59, 60 and 62 the words 'the Government' substituted for the words 'His Highness' by Act X of 1996.], so confine them.
