State of Bihar - Section

Section 371 in Bihar Board's Miscellaneous Rules, 1958

371. Acquisition of old coins, not treasure-trove.

- All Collectors are empowered to purchase, otherwise than when proceeding under the provisions of the Act, any coins, whether gold, silver or copper, which appear to be old and not of British mintage, when they are less than Rs. 10 in value on payment of a sum equal to the value of the materials of the coins, together with one fifth of such value. A report of the coins so purchased shall be submitted to Government in the Revenue Department, the coins themselves being forwarded either to the Bihar Coin Cabinet, Bankipore or to any other centre which Government may direct for distribution in the manner prescribed in Rule 372 below. In order to obviate the hardship which the law, as it at present stands, may inflict on individuals when finds of distinct historical or archaeological interest are acquired under Section 16 of the Act and in order to ensure that museums are not deprived of valuable relics, special rewards should be made in addition to the amount legally payable under Section 16. When a find is judged by the Collector to be deserving of a special reward, he should refer it to the Superintendent, Archaeological Survey, Central Circle, for his opinion. The Provincial Government will address the Director-General of Archaeology forwarding the opinion of the Superintendent, Archaeological Survey. The Director-General will, if he considers that there is a reason for giving a special reward, assess the amount which will be debited to his budget allotment for the purpose.
