Section 20(1) in The First Statutes of the National Institutes of Technology
(1)Each Department and Centre of the Institute shall be placed in charge of a Head, who shall be selected by the Director, from amongst the Professors and Associate Professors of that Department or Centre.Provided that if a Department or Centre has no Professor or Associate Professor, the Director may appoint an Assistant Professor of that Department or Centre to head the Department or Centre.
