Section 26(2) in The Sikh Gurdwaras Board Election Rules, 1959

(2)The returning officer shall appoint a presiding officer for each polling station and such other persons (hereinafter referred to as polling officers) to assist the presiding officer as he may deem necessary but he shall not appoint any person who has been employed by or on behalf of or has been otherwise working for, a candidate in or about the election. If the presiding officer, owing to illness or other unavoidable cause, absents himself from the polling station, his functions shall be performed by such polling officer as has been previously authorized by the returning officer to perform such functions during any such absence, and if a polling officer is absent from the polling station, the presiding officer may subject to the restriction imposed above, appoint any person who is present at the polling station to be the polling officer and inform the returning officer accordingly.The returning officer may at any time, if he thinks fit, appoint any other person to act in place of any person previously appointed.
