(e)be in a state of readiness to turn out fully accoutred and armed immediately, whenever called on to do so or an alarm is given, and to do all lawful acts and things necessary or expedient for the purpose of maintaining order, quelling any disturbance, preventing any combined attempt to escape or to break out of jail, defending the jail and all property therein or thereto pertaining, from attacks from with within or without the jail.
