Section 95 in The Central Motor Vehicles Rules, 1989

95. Size and ply rating of tyres.

- [(1) The tyres including radial tyres used on all motor vehicles manufactured or imported on and after the 1st day of April, 2006, other than agricultural tractors, construction equipment vehicles [or a combine harvester] [Sub-Rule (1) substituted by GSR 589(E), dated 16.9.2005 (w.e.f. 16.9.2005).] and power tillers shall comply with the requirements specified in is: 15627-2005 or [IS: 15633-2005 or IS: 15636-2005 applicable] [Substituted by GSR 784(E), dated 12.11.2008 (w.e.f. 1.4.2009).]:Provided that the selection and fitment of tyres for motor vehicles manufactured or imported on and from the 1st day of April, 2006 shall be in accordance with AIS:050:2004 in the case of two and three-wheelers and AIS:051:2004 in the case other motor vehicles, till such time the corresponding BIS specifications are notified under the Bureau of Indian Standards Act, 1986 (63 of 1986):Provided further that Central Institute of Road Transport, Pune and any other agency which may be authorised by Central Government from time to time can carry tests for verification against AIS:044:2004 for tyres for the purposes of rule 126.][* * *] [Sub-rule (2) Omitted by Notification No. G.S.R. 76(E), dated 31.1.2000 (w.e.f. 2.6.1989).][[(2-A) The size of the tyres of a construction equipment vehicle] [Inserted by GSR 642(E), dated 28.7.2000 (w.e.f. 28.7.2000).] specified in column (1) of the Table below shall have a ply rating specified in the corresponding entry in column (2) of the said Table in respect of maximum weight permitted to be carried by such tyre specified in the corresponding entry in column (3) thereof:Provided that the maximum safe load for single axle with two or more tyres shall not exceed 10.2 tonnes.]Off-The-Road Service Conventional andWide Base Diagonal Ply TyresTable
