SHRI RAMCHANDRA HANSDAH (MAYURBHANJ): We have many languages, cultures and religions existing together. It is said, “language is but the vehicle of culture”. To reflect the inclusive character of our country, we have to give recognition to some of the major languages in the Eighth Schedule of our Constitution. Though initially, there were 14 languages, but later, a few Constitutional Amendment Acts added 8 more languages making 22 languages in the List. There are 29 major languages which are spoken by more than 1 million speakers. …(Interruptions)

          There are demands from various quarters to include these major languages, which are left out, in the Eighth Schedule of our Constitution. Time and again, the hon. Chief Minister of Odisha has also sent letters to the Central Government for ‘Ho’ and ‘Kosali’ language to be included in the Eighth Schedule.

Ho and Mundari languages are two major languages spoken by tribal people of my area. There is a strong demand from them that their languages also be given Constitutional recognition. Therefore, Madam, I rise to raise this point before the you so that the Central Government takes needful action for inclusion of these two languages in the Eighth Schedule of our Constitution. …(Interruptions)
