Section 8(2)(i) in The Inland Vessels (Grant of Certificate of Competency to Engineers and Engine Drivers) (Orissa) Rules, 1989

(i)he must have served for a period of not less than three years as an apprentice in an approved marine workshop and have served for six months in the engine room of a mechanically propelled vessel having engine of not less than 85 brake horse-power or nine months in a vessel having an engine of not less than 40 brake horse-power; or
