SHRI P.R. SUNDARAM (NAMAKKAL): Namakkal District in Tamil Nadu is the largest producer of poultry. 34 Million Eggs are produced every day. All over Tamil Nadu and Kerala, Eggs are supplied from here, and Eggs are exported to Maldives and Afghanistan.
Namakkal receives 500 to 550 mm rainfall leading to failure in agriculture. Because of this Tapioca Farmers have turned to Poultry.
Namakkal has more than 800 farms with an average of 50,000 hens, giving employment directly and indirectly to 10,000families. For quality and nourishment, poultry are reared in platform cages, in good environment for all climatic conditions. The present poultry rearing system is as per modern scientific guidance & welfare, the chicks are taken care of to ensure quality and interest of public and provide eggs at an affordable price. To avoid variations in market price, cold storage facilities are also created to store surplus eggs.
Tamil Nadu is the first State to introduce eggs in noon meal scheme in schools from 1990 which is followed by many States. Hence, to safeguard the welfare of Poultry Farmers the Union Government is urged to give attention to protect the interests of poultry farmers.
