Seventeenth Loksabha > Title: Regarding construction of a dam across Cauvery river at Mekedatu in Karnataka-laid.
SHRI VE. VAITHILINGAM (PUDUCHERRY): The Government of Karnataka is planning to construct a dam across Cauvery river at Mekedatu. If this dam is constructed, the Karaikal region delta farmers will be badly affected. This proposed dam can store water upto 67 TMC which will affect the supply to Tamil Nadu and Puducherry. This in turn will affect the agricultural activity in this region and economic condition of the people. The Central Government should intervene and stop the project. Also, Karnataka is constructing a dam across Markandeya Nadi which is a major source of water to Thenpennai river flowing in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and which empties in Bay of Bengal. The South Pennai river is source of irrigation in many villages of Puducherry and caters around 4778 acres of land. This is against the Inter-State River Water Dispute Act-1956. The Central Government should remove the constructed portion immediately.
