Section 6(1) in The Tamil Nadu Co-Operative Societies Act, 1983
(1)No society, other than a society of which a member is a registered society, shall be registered under this Act which does not consist of at least twenty-five independent persons qualified to be admitted as members under this Act and residing or owning immovable property in the area of operation of the society.Explanation I. - For the purposes of this sub-section, an independent person means a person who is not dependent upon another person joining in the application for the registration of the society for his means of livelihood and who does not belong to the family of any other person joining in the application for the registration of the society.Explanation II. - For the purposes of Explanation I, "family" includes husband or wife, as the case may be, and the dependent children and dependent parents.
