Reported Move To Privatise The Weights And Measures Evaluation System In The ... on 20 December, 2004

Title: Reported move to privatise the Weights and Measures Evaluation System in the country.

SHRI ALKESH DAS (NAWADWIP): A Committee, consisting of top industrialists formed by the Director of BIS instructions, has proposed that weigh and measure system as well as the collection of tax should be through a private organisation. The total system would be controlled by the Central Government instead of the State Government, for which each State Government separately would lose above Rs. 10 crore annually. Again, the salary and T.A. of the Controller and the Inspectors are going to be given by the State Governments. Again, these private companies are getting the right to certify by putting national emblem `ASHOK STAMBHA’. The manufacturers of weighing instruments have to pay more than five to 20 times for license and extra one lakh guarantee money. The fee hike for the calibration certificate is ten times. Actually, for this 40 lakh people, who are connected with weigh and measure industry, will become jobless and the weigh and measure system of our country will also be at stake.

So, I want to draw your kind attention and the attention of the concerned hon. Minister in this regard.
