- Every convict and every unconvicted criminal or civil prisoner who does not maintain himself shall, when not lawfully subjected to punishment, by penal diet, or placed on special diet, on medical grounds by proper authority, daily receive the scale of prison diet provided for prisoners of the class to which he belongs.
