Section 1 in The Calcutta Hackney-Carriage Act, 1919

1. Short title, commencement and extent. -

(1)This Act may be called the Calcutta Hackney-carriage Act, 1919;
(2)It shall come into force on such date as the [State Government] [Words substituted by the Government of India (Adaptation of Indian Laws) Order, 1937 and the Adaptation of Laws Order, 1950.] may, by notification, direct; and
(3)It shall apply in the first instance only to Calcutta :[Provided that nothing in this Act shall apply in Calcutta to any type of vehicle the driving or use of which has been prohibited with the previous sanction of the] [Proviso added by W.B. Act. 36 of 1948.] [State] [Word substituted by the Adaptation of Laws Order, 1950.] Government by the Commissioner of Police under section 61A of the Calcutta Police Act, 1866, and section 38A of the Calcutta Suburban Police Act, 1866.Explanation. - In this proviso, -
(1)"Calcutta" means the town of Calcutta as defined in section 3 of the Calcutta Police Act, 1866, together with the suburbs of Calcutta as defined by notification under section 1 of the Calcutta Suburban Police Act, 1866; and
(2)"streets" and "public places" have the same meanings as in the Calcutta Police Act, 1866, and the Calcutta Suburban Police Act, 1866.
