DR. THOKCHOM MEINYA (INNER MANIPUR): Thank you, Madam. I rise to raise an urgent matter of public importance.
Madam, yesterday tragedy strikes at National Highways in North Eastern Region. Due to that, 22 people died and 38 were injured. This occurred on National Highway No.2. Two accidents happened on National Highway No. 2 connecting Dimapur to Imphal.
Another accident happened in National Highway No.37 connecting Jiribam to Imphal. In these accidents, 21 persons died including one driver. We were expecting that a condolence reference would be made in the House today but unfortunately, it did not happen. We do not know the causes of these accidents. However, the apparent reason could be, undoubtedly, the bad and pathetic road condition of the national highways. Two incidents happened on the National Highway-2 and one on NH-37.
Here I would like to draw the attention of the Union Government to the fact that there were proposals to make these National Highways all weather roads by making NH-2, a 4-lane highway and NH-37, a 2-lane highway. Hence I strongly urge upon the Union Government and the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, in particular, to take immediate steps to make these two National Highways – the life lines of the State of Manipur – all weather roads by constructing and converting NH-2 into 4-lane and NH-37 into 2-lane.
