Regarding Measure To Be Taken For Water Problem Faced In Tamil Nadu. on 1 July, 2019

Seventeenth Loksabha > Title: Regarding measure to be taken for water problem faced in Tamil Nadu.

DR. A. CHELLAKUMAR (KRISHNAGIRI): Sir, I would like to draw the attention of the august House to the acute water scarcity in Tamil Nadu, in general, and in  my constituency, Krishnagiri, in particular. Nature was kind enough in 2015 with heavy rainfail in almost 15 revenue districts in Tamil Nadu. Due of lack of vision of the State administration, they had not properly stored and harvested rainwater resulting in hardship to the people.

Desalination project alone is not a permanent solution. I would like to strongly suggest and recommend a longstanding solution to this problem of my constituency. First is the inter-linking of 33 lakes with Badathala lake by formation of canals. Second is diversion of water from Kelavarapalli Dam to the nearby lakes, particularly to Durai lake in Shoolagiri, then to Chinnar Dam. Third is diversion of water of Aliyalam Dam to Rayakottai via Uttanapalli. Fourth is the implementation of Vaani Odu scheme.

There is long pending delay in the implementation of these schemes, though the State Government have in principle announced the projects. Hence, I request the Central Government, through you, Sir, to expedite the schemes by providing Central funds,  if required, like the then UPA Government had sanctioned Rs.1,000 crore to the then State Government  for desalination projects.
