Rise In Prices Of Printing Thereby Affecting The Regional Newspapers. on 23 April, 2008

> Title: Rise in prices of printing thereby affecting the Regional Newspapers.     SHRI N.N. KRISHNADAS (PALGHAT): Sir, I draw the attention of the Government to a very vital matter. Almost all the regional and vernacular newspapers in the country are in deep crisis due to the steep hike in the prices of the newsprint. The survival of such vernacular newspapers is in very deep crisis. I am quoting one example. In the State of Kerala, there is one Hindustan Newsprint Limited. The Government of Kerala is providing bamboo for generating pulp at one rupee per quintal. They have not increased a single paisa for the last 20 years. MR. SPEAKER: This is the problem. The problem is that you think you can start a debate on this. SHRI N.N. KRISHNADAS : But in one year, two or three times, the price of the newsprint has been increased. So, the vernacular newspapers in the country are in a very, very deep crisis. MR. SPEAKER: What will happen? Yesterday’s debate on Defence Budget does not find any mention in almost all the newspapers. न्यूज प्रिंट लेकर क्या होगा? SHRI N.N. KRISHNADAS : Sir, I am talking about the vernacular newspapers like Deshabhimani andGanashakti. So, I would urge upon the Government to come forward to protect the vernacular newspapers of the country by giving the newsprint to such newspapers either by subsidizing the rate or revoking the recent price hike of the newsprint. MR. SPEAKER: It is enough. Other matters will be taken up at the end of the day. … (Interruptions)
