Section 25(4) in Banaras Hindu University Act, 1915
(4)Each Department shall have a Head who may be a University Professor or, if there is no Professor, a Reader, and whose duties, functions and terms and conditions of appointment shall be laid down by the Ordinances:Provided that, if there are two or more Professors or Readers in any Department, no person shall be appointed to be the Head of the Department otherwise than in accordance with the provisions made in respect thereof by the Ordinances:Provided further that, if there is no Professor or Reader in a Department, the Dean of the Faculty concerned shall act as the Head of the Department.
