Section 3(1) in Securities and Exchange Board of India (Foreign Portfolio Investors) Regulations, 2014

(1)No person shall buy, sell or otherwise deal in securities as a foreign portfolio investor unless it has obtained a certificate granted by the designated depository participant on behalf of the Board:Provided that a foreign institutional investor or sub-account may, subject to payment of conversion fees as specified in Part A of the Second Schedule, continue to buy, sell or otherwise deal in securities subject to the provisions of these regulations, till the expiry of its registration as a foreign institutional investor or sub-account, or until he obtains a certificate of registration as foreign portfolio investor, whichever is earlier:Provided further that a qualified foreign investor may continue to buy, sell or otherwise deal in securities subject to the provisions of these regulations, for a period of one year from the date of commencement of these regulations, or until he obtains a certificate of registration as foreign portfolio investor, whichever is earlier.
