SHRI ABU HASEM KHAN CHOWDHURY (MALDAHA DAKSHIN): Hon. Speaker, through you, I would like to bring to the notice of the Central Government the tragic situation caused due to flood and erosion caused by Ganga River in my Parliamentary Constituency Maldaha this year, particularly, in Maldaha and parts of Murshidabad, particularly Farakka, Shamsherganj and Dhulian.
The erosion caused due to the shift in the course of the river has been causing havoc in the region for past many years on both sides of the Ganga River. However, this year, the situation is extremely problematic, especially, in Dhulian. Continuous shifting of river course and erosion has introduced vulnerable conditions on physical as well as social environment. The Government of West Bengal does whatever it can but it is not adequate. In the past, the UPA Government decided to take the responsibility of erosion control for 80 km. downstream and 40 km. upstream but that has been given up by this Government.
