Sixteenth Loksabha an> title: Need to sponsor a resolution in United Nations condemning the genocide of Tamils committed in Sri Lanka.
DR. J. JAYAVARDHAN (CHENNAI SOUTH): In the final stages of the civil war in Sri Lanka, there was ethnic pogrom and genocide was perpetrated on Tamil minority in Sir Lanka.
Former Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu Puratchi thalavi amma had requested that the Government of India should sponsor a resolution in the United Nations condemning the genocide that took place in Sri Lanka and take stringent action against all those responsible for the genocide in order to render justice to the Tamils in Sri Lanka. The resolution should also provide for holding a referendum amongst Tamils in Sri Lanka and the displaced Sri Lankan Tamils across the world for formation of a separate Tamil Eelam. Further, voluntary repatriation of Sri Lankan Tamil refugees is premature and should be deferred for the present as conditions in the Northern and Eastern provinces of Sri Lanka are still not conducive for the Tamil refugees to return to their native land. The process of voluntary repatriation could be considered only after concrete and credible measures are taken by the Sri Lankan government and the Sri Lankan refugees in Tamil Nadu are given adequate verifiable assurances and have gained the requisite confidence to return to their native land.
