Besides land drainage, there are large number or marine coastal out falls discharging directly or indirectly industrial and municipal effluents into seas. Uncontrolled disposal of land-based waste into the seas, through rivers and effluent outfalls, is a major cause of pollution of coastal waters. There are nine coastal States and one Union Territory (UT) in India namely, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Goa, Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Pondicherry (UT), Andhra Pradesh, Orissa and West Bengal, More than one-fourth of the total population of the country is settled in the coastal areas.
