8. Another factor that needs to be examined by us while dealing with the
charge of dowry death is the proximity between the time of demand of
dowry and the time of death of the deceased. It is a settled principle of law
that the demand of dowry to be covered under Section 304-B of IPC, has
to be made soon before death. It has been held that no definite
interpretation can be given to the phrase "soon before death". It would be
appropriate to reproduce the observations made by the Apex Court in the
Crl L.P. 38/2012 Page 3 of 8
case of Satvir Singh v. State of Punjab, (2001) 8 SCC 633, with respect
to the phrase "soon before":
