In the case of Sharad Birdhichand Sarda vs. State of Maharashtra , reported in (1984) 4 SCC 116, it has been held by the Hon'ble Supreme Court of India that - "While dealing with circumstantial evidence, it has been held that the onus was on the prosecution to prove that the chain is complete and the infirmity or lacuna in prosecution cannot be cured by false defence or plea.
