(1)A child up to six years of age shall be admitted to prison with his mother if no other arrangements, for keeping him with relatives or otherwise, can be made. Children born in prison may remain with their mother upto six years of age, if they cannot otherwise be suitably placed. The Medical Officer shall determine the age of children not born in prison for the purpose of this provision.(2)No child shall be admitted into or retained in prison if he has attained the age of six years. The Superintendent shall inform the Directorate of Social Welfare about all children of that age for placing them in a home run by the Social Welfare Department.(3)Children kept under protective custody in a home of the Department of Social Welfare shall be allowed to meet their mother at least once a week.This apart, any guideline required on the subject shall be framed under this Act or rule made thereunder.
