Section 68 in Madras Estates Land Act, 1908

68. Application to deposit rent.

(1)In any of the following cases in which rent is due and is payable in money, namely: -
(a)when a ryot tenders money on account of rent due from him, and the landholder refuses to receive it or refuses to grant a receipt for it; or
(b)when the rent is payable to two or more persons jointly, and the ryot is unable to obtain the joint receipt of the said persons for the money, and no person has been empowered to receive the rent on their behalf; or
(c)when two or more persons severally claim the right to collect the rent or when the ryot entertains a bona fide doubt as to who is entitled to receive the rent which has become due;

(2)The application shall contain a statement of the grounds on which it is made; and shall state the item or items to which the payment is to be credited and also -in case (a), the name of the person to whose credit the deposit is to be entered;in case (b), the names of the persons to whom the rent is due, or of so many of them as the ryot may be able to specify; andin case (c), the name of the person or persons to whom the rent was last paid and of the person or persons now claiming it.[***] [Sub-section (3) was omitted by section 44(ii) of the Madras Estates Land (Amendment) Act, 1934 (Madras Act VIII of 1934).]
