Section 144(2) in The Punjab Motor Vehicles Rules, 1989
(2)On every public service vehicle space shall be reserved for the driver's seat such as to allow him to exercise full and unimpeded control of the vehicle and in particular:-(a)the part of the seat against which the driver's back rests shall not be less than 280 millimetres from the nearest point on the steering wheel and that the seat shall be so constructed as to be adjustable in such a way that the distance is increased 350 millimetres, the driver's seat shall be constructed as to permit an up and down adjustment in addition to the fore and after adjustments mentioned herein.(b)the width across the vehicle shall not be less than 680 millimetres and shall extend to the left of the centre of the steering column, in no case less than 250 millimetres and so that a line drawn parallel to the axis of the vehicle through the centre of any gear lever, brake lever, or other device to which the driver has to have frequent access lies not less than 50 millimetres inside the width reserved for the driver's seat; and(c)in the case of a public service vehicle other than a motor cab, the space reserved in accordance with clause (b) shall be at the left hand and be enclosed with a rigid wooden or other suitable partition to a height not less than 300 millimetres above the seat and continued forward of the seat at an adequate height above the floor of the vehicle.
