After demonetisation, there has been a tremendous push for digitalisation but it is a known fact that India is vulnerable to cyber crime as enough firewalls have not been built to protect our interests.  There is a need to urgently upgrade our defences by setting up cyber security.  Yes, the Government has initiated a number of programmes to enhance participation of citizens in the fully digitalised economy.  But, according to the latest report by Internet Crime Complaint Centre of the United States of America, India ranks second amongst the list of the world in vulnerable countries, excluding USA, who are victims of cyber crime.  Prominent forms of cyber crime today are identity theft, financial fraud, planting of malicious software which we call malware, conducting espionage, disrupting critical infrastructure and facilitating terrorist activities.  The rise of mobile technology and cloud computing has further complicated the entire cyber security landscape.  One instance in recent years has been a malware injection in the systems of Hitachi Payment Services Pvt. Ltd. in 2016 which caused the largest data breach in India’s banking system affecting nearly 3.2 million debit cards.
