degradation
process of DNA material in bloodstains remaining on
cotton fabric after washing.
Our research showed that the DNA degradation index
in overall sample ... between washing of the bloodstained cotton fabric
and the DNA analysis. The highest DNA degradation index
values were measured in the sample group that
noted as under:
"(a) Technical Errors
Firstly, the DNA-probe can be contaminated or
degraded. This is specially the case with field samples ... DNA. The degradation is especially likely when the
DNA is in warm, moist conditions. Normally, DNA
degrades in a couple of days and vaginal swabs
matches completely with the
DNA profile obtained from Exhibit-10(blood sample of
deceased Lekh Raj)
(ii) The partial DNA profile obtained from Exhibit ... spot) and Exhibit-5 (Hammer
produced by accused) yielded highly degraded DNA
from which no DNA profile could be generated.

As regards the extra judicial confession, accused Vikram Singh along with accused Surinder
ordered DNA test for identifying the deceased. The officer reporting the DNA
isolation results has observed as follows:
"Observations: Extremely degraded DNA was recovered
subjected to DNA isolation. The source
exhibit '1' yielded degraded DNA which was amplified and did not
give any DNA profile. Therefore ... DNA isolation.
