Section 16(5)(a) in The U.P. Pravidhik Shiksha (Admission Conduct of Examinations and Conferment of Certificates and Diplomas) Regulations, 1992

(a)Explanation-When a candidate appears at the ensuing Annual Examination of the next higher class with Back Paper(s) of the proceeding lower class :
(i)the Back Paper(s) shall be considered as part of the next higher class for the award of grace mark under Regulation 24. But no grace marks shall be awarded if a candidate appears only in Back Paper(s) as the case may be. In such case he shall have to obtain the minimum pass marks prescribed for the respective theory/practical examination;
(ii)he shall not be required to appear again in the Back Papers in which he obtains the minimum pass marks prescribed for the respective theory/practical, even if he fails at the ensuing examination of the next higher class.
