Section 72 in The Indian Port Health Rules, 1955

72.

(1)If death occurs during the day on board a ship within port limits, the ensign and house flag, if any, shall immediately be lowered to half-mast and keep in that position from sunrise till sunset as long as the dead body remains on board; and if death occurs between sunset and sunrise, one red light shall be hoisted at the peak, half-mast high.
(2)Every ship arriving at a port witli a dead body on board shall, if the arrival is by day, hoist the appropriate International Code Signal in accordance with Code Book, Volume I, and, if the arrival is by night, transmit a message to the Signal Station, intimating the fact of a dead body being on board.
