Section 12 in The Merchant Shipping (Fire Appliances) Rules, 1969
12. Water pipes, hydrants and fire hoses.
(1)Every ship of Class I shall be provided with water service pipes, hydrants and hoses such that an adequate supply of water for rapid and simultaneous operation of at least two fire hoses, not emanating from the same hydrant, for the projection of two powerful jets of water would be available.(2)The number and position of hydrants shall be such that at least two such jets of water may he rapidly and simultaneously directed into any part of the ship by means of two fire hoses one of which shall not exceed 18.00 metres in length and each such jet of water being supplied from a separate hydrant.(3)At least one fire hose shall be provided for each such hydrant and all hoses so provided shall be used for the purposes of extinguishing fires or for the testing of fire-fighting appliances at fire drills and surveys.
